programmable ones are a no no i'm afraid cos you could just stick formulae into them.

Ah that explains (as if I didn't know already) why school leavers today cant do even simple math in their heads! They are taught to use calculators for everything.
To answer your question, I think that they ban anything more than a straightforward 8 digit (non-scientific) calculator.

I think you NEED a scientific calculator... and I havn't really seen different types... unless you mean those huge ones with small LCD displays giving you complex diagrams based on mathmatical equations... and moble phones... but they dont have a sciency bit... so any scientific one would do... all the same really...
