Oak trees, which are all over Georgia. (not only near the coast)
RAYJAYM: We had 1 in our front yard and 3 in back...we lived in Athens, GA. When I get back to GA, I will make some photos and send them if you really want to see...otherwise, you'll have to believe me on this one.
You're closer to Athens than me now...go see for yourself. It's a lovely city and the live oaks are all over the place.

The Live Oak. Although I am not sure why, they are not widespread in Ga, only near the coast.
And to JasSays, I am from Ga as well, lived here all of my life, Live Oaks are mostly around the coast, we have other species of oak elsewhere, red oaks, water oaks, white oaks, pin oaks, etc..... There are many species of oak, but the state tree is the LIVE oak, and if you have ever seen one in the mountains of ga, or in atl for that matter, please email me, I want to see it!
Well you may be right, but I still believe you are mistaking it for another species of oak. I am about 30 min se of atlanta, and I have three red oaks, a white oak, and a water oak in my front yard, all very large old trees, but I have never seen a live oak in north or central ga. At the least live oaks are very uncommon that far north, but you did make me question myself so I did a little search, if you notice their native range is from Columbus to Savanah and south, mostly around the coast. I guess nothing is impossible though.
I don't mean to be rude, and I will admit when I am wrong, if I am proven wrong.
I will have to check closer then, I go to athens quite a bit, it is only 45 min from here, I am going next weekend to see my friends band at the 40 watt club, guess I'll have to go earlier so I can check it out in the daylight. Someone could have slipped a few in, they can be planted there, though they aren't native, and they generally don't do well in clay soils. I have two in my greenhouse, about 2 years old, I planted them from acorns brought back from my great great uncles house in Jacksonville Florida.
17. Quercus hemisphaerica, Laurel Oak - Semi-evergreen oak (drops leaves in February in Athens) that is confused with live oak and willow oak. Grows in drier soils than many oaks. Georgia.
