Sounds interesting. They are looking into such a technology in soccer to see if the ball went in the goal. This issue in football is that what you are measuring against for a first down moves. It might make sense to start with Touchdowns because you could put sensors in the goal line and know when it was crossed by the ball. You could then impose the timing of this on the replay so they can tell if the ball got accross before the guy was down.

It's a great idea in theory but the technology isn't to that level yet. As well there would still be problems b/c the ball wouldn't know when the player was down or the play stopped so you could see how this could cause problems

That's a great idea and I hope the NFL looks into it. It wouldn't be too expensive if they reuused the CPUs after a football was worn out.

Even with technology like that, you can only be so accurate. And with all the balls being used, especially in the Super Bowl, that would be a waste of money. The way they use now is just fine.

They can only get so accurate with those GPS chips. Most can only locate within 10 feet. That is not good enough.

Cost way too much. They use a ton of footballs during the game. Can you imagine how much it would cost to put one in each of them. I think the current system is just fine.

High cost, low benefit I imagine. Also, can you imagine what would happen to a computer chip that had 400lb guys jumping on it all day?
