He can be but a goalie must be quick and agile around the crease and net area and sumo wrestling will not do the trick. The goalie must also be able to dig a puck out of the corners quickly and the sumo sized man would have difficulty doing that maneuver. He must also be agile enough to cut down the angle of an opposing skater coming in for a shot on net. This kind of size would hurt a team.

No matter how big the goalie is, he needs to be agile enough to cover all the holes. And I think a 500 pound skater would have a hell-of-a time trying to stop on the ice.

Because that would negate the point of having a goalie. That person is there because they are supposed to be acrobatic - nimble enough to stop shots with the power of their body. Someone who is Sumo-wrestler size wouldn't be much different from a wall. We watch hockey partly to see whether the goalie CAN stop shots.

Because then he would have no mobility and guys would score on those "few holes" when the goalie can't move at all to cover them.

To cover the entire net opening, he would have to be 6' wide
or 6' tall and 4' wide and lay on the ice for three periods
Anything less would leave openings that would require cat-like reflexes to cover
And you never see a fat cat catch a mouse

I think someone asks this question every month.....
a big guy would give up a ton of goals along the ice...too slow, no lateral movement.
if he lays down to take away the ice, those guys could just have a field day knocking his water bottle off the top of the net...

He'd be too slow, having such a bulk to move around. You need top notch reflexes and quick movements to be a goalie, not brute force and weight.

Even Konishiki or Akebono couldn't cover the whole net and would be hopelessly slow. Trust me, I used to play hockey in Japan and if it was feasible they would have done it.

Because you still need mobility to move from side to side, covering angles, retrieving pucks, rushing to the net on a delayed penalty or an extra attacker, etc, etc, etc...

Well simple, because he would never be able to cover those holes.
