I placed an order on Jan 8 this year from Canada, and still haven't received it as it "has gone out surface and not by air" (they're words). How long am I expected to wait if something's gone out by surface? I ordered beauty products. Do you think I should ask for a refund? After all, it's their mistake that it wasn't sent by air? Money has been taken from my account.

I would expect by surface it means as it says which would be land and sea. from Canada a ship could take 5 or 6 weeks then when unloaded could have its containers sitting in dock for days or weeks then when the container arrives at it destination depending on the backlog of work there could be another couple of weeks before you get your goods.
Of course it may not take that long but be prepared to wait if you trust the source you are buying from, if not keep an eye on your bank account

Generally speaking surface transport should only take about 7 days.
however it is standard practice to allow 28 days for delivery of mail order products. they have exceeded this already. Ask them for a refund as nothing has arrived and you have been forced to buy elsewhere. they may require that you notify them and return the goods when and if they arrive. Promise this notify them by surface mail when and if they do and give them 14 days to arrange collection (reasonable) once your 14 days has expired the goods are legally yours if they have failed to collect them!

I'm afraid that means cargo shipment (by boat) if you paid the lowest fee to send the parcel. Check your order if you can; if there is no disclaimer, you may be entitled to a refund. Or just allow a delay ... Hope that helps.

Surface mail is generally slower, as it travels by land. E.g car and boat. Air mail is normally faster as, it travels by air. Hence why airmail is normally a bit more expensive.

I would say 6-8 weeks minimum. Also, be prepared to pay import VAT, and brokerage surchages.
