Your age is important in answering this question. New onset indigestion in a patient in their 50s needs urgent investigation to exclude serious disease.

Assuming you are younger, and most people on the net still are, there are 2 common issues.
1) GORD gastro oesophageal reflux disease. Here the one way valve at the top of the stomach is failing and acid comes up the oesophagus (swallowing tube), it may even enter the mouth. It produces unpleasant burning, especially at night.

It is dealt with by trying to be the correct weight, acid lowering drugs, antacids and very occasionally surgery. Treatment is often long term.

2) Ulcer type disease. About 85% of this is linked to an organism which causes infection in the stomach, helicobacter pylorii. There are 3 tests for this, a blood test, a breath test or a biopsy.

It can be cured by eradication therapy. This consists of 2 antibiotics and high dose acid lowering therapy usually taken for a week. This is up to 85% successful.

About 15% of patients with ulcer disease have no bug infection and they have to stay on acid-lowering treatments long term.

Quite a lot of patients have both diseases together and thus even if the bug is killed they still suffer from GORD.

You should see your GP. If you are young the amount of investigation carried out is usually minimal.

You may have a mild lactose intolerance. all my mom's side of the family get indigestion whenever they drink milk but not when they eat cheese or yogurt, etc. So it could be that.
You could also have a gluten intolerance (gluten is the protein in wheat). try switching to gluten free bread products for a month and see what happens.
The above two reasons are more about indigestion in your intestines.
If you are referring to indigestion as in heartburn, it could also be a number of things.
Some people have indigestion because of spicy foods. For me, if i eat raw onions at night, i get heartburn, but not if i eat raw onions in the morning. Everybody is different.
On the more serious side, it could be irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux (which is bad because the reflux wears away at your esophogeal lining) or other gastrointestinal diseases.
I'd say before you get too worried, try cutting out dairy, wheat, and spicy foods for a couple weeks and see if it gets better. if not, better to to the doctor. Good luck!

You could have acid reflux. This is when the valve to your stomach doesn't close properly and the acids from your stomach will come up and give you indigestion. I had this problem myself, and they did a test at the hospital where I had to drink some stuff and then they x-rayed to see if it stayed in my stomach. It showed it coming back up, and told me it was acid reflux and gave me antacids and a prescription to help.
Hope you get it checked out and feel better soon.

I'm a medical researcher. It is widely agreed among physicians and medical paraprofessionals, that initial diagnosis, mostly by using a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is necessary to ensure the most effective and quick treatment for this condition. Approx 70% of the acid reflux diagnostics that are based on the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Since acid reflux, also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can cause patients a great deal of discomfort and result in severe complications, it is highly important to know how to identify its symptoms in order to quickly diagnose and treat it.

When I had it .. it was a combination of stress (well yeah) and the types of food I ate and at what time I ate it.
I had to really do some experimenting with that before I came up with the right combination for me that stopped it. Mine was eating too late. I stopped solid foods around 3pm in the afternoon. I still had a water and milk (but no tea that would make the acid return).
You might find it is something else but I did get a check up before I started looking at what foods I can eat.. and at what time of day.

how does you indigestion manifest by vomiting or by diarrhea? if vomiting then it could be gastroesophageal reflux means that you're acidic and you should tone down on carbonated beverages, tomatoes, milk, coffee, anything caffeineited and fatty foods plus you should see a doctor because there might be a need to view inside you (endoscopy), if it's diarrhea then it could be your intentines, it could be irritable bowel syndrome where in your intestines are hypersensitive to some foods and do not absorb them so they are directly expelled fast by the body as diarrhea. to me it sounds like either way, reflux or IBS, see your doc. :-)
