For years I`ve been researching for some bit of evidence confirming the Red smear against Charlie Chaplin....ie that he was a Jew named Youngstein, etc.
Nothing.
Evidence from the Hollywood end was that he was 100% WASP. He belonged to the LAAC. He frequently clubs and societies which excluded Jews from membership.
And then, voila. All at once I came upon a small shred of evidence about his appearance at the Cambridge Music Hall in the East End of London.
Chaplin had been given a ticket by the peanut merchant for whom he worked- actually it was Barney Springer and the peanuts were only one of his concessions- and did a standup routine at the end of George Robey`s act which sent the people wild.
Well, I`ve been including this in a proposal for a book I`m doing (trying to get a publisher) and the next thing I see is somehow talking about Chaplin`s first appearance in the East End and the antiSemitic shtik he did.
Makes you think. Mum is dumb or smart???????
