yeah, lawn darts called "jarts" were a blast.

I had a game called "booby trap" that had little round pegs of varying sizes all jammed into a wooden tray and held in place by a spring loaded bar. The idea was to take away, one at a time, each peg without getting booby trapped.

I also had erector sets, tinker toys, lincoln logs, and aside from the obvious Barbies...a bunch of Trolls. I was able to find trolls - originals - on ebay and have a bunch now along with the troll house that I had as a kid (Mom through all my old toys out).

Thanks for the memories!!

Speaking from Australia the best toys were Dinky Cars great fun outdoors and they were solid, made to last
Hula hoops
Decent size dolls not plastic all were repairable at the dolls Hospital
Making your own kites.
Mecanno sets made of steel that lasted forever and worked
Teddy Bears that were repairable and all jointed not made with beans some People in there 60s now still have thereTeddys.
Making roads in dirt for your dinky Car we would spend hours doing that
Train sets made of hard metal some do still exist today "Hornby" trains are very collectible now

There are some good websites out as it's a common topic in schools so google it and you will get stuff, try
www.primaryresources.com - one of the biggest lesson planning sites
and the BBC
also if you are in London take him/ her to the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood, there are other toy museums-again, google to find one near you!
Have fun!
We played with my mum's toys in our childhood, I grew up in the 80s, but we had plenty of toys from the 60s- Sindy's sister Patch and a sindy dog made of pipe cleaners, a doll which was very hard and uncuddly, unlike dolls today- if you moved it's arms the legs would move with them- left with left, right with right- thus you could make it walk, there was also a bear with a growl in its tummy if you shook it, and an ugly, ugly sindy type doll with huge pointy boobs!!

In the 40s the must have toy was a Hornby trainset, or a Meccano set. With Meccano, you could make about 5 or6 models with the one kit. It was an all metal kit and gave hours of fun and it was educational as well.
