You can get a refund if you send in the lid to Peter Pan.
(From the ConAgra site):
"If consumers have this product, they should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103."

First off did you check to make sure the jar you have is one that is being recalled? Its not all Peter Pan Peanut butter, just certain batches. Secondly, it doesn't sound like you have even tried taking it back to the store. If you did, and they tried to fight you did you talk to the manager? If that doesn't work, write to, or call the ppl who make the peanut butter and see what they say. They might give you your money back directly.
If after all that you still don't get anything, then stop using the brand. Honestly it probably won't hurt the companies bottom line, but if more ppl would stick by there morals, and do things like this, less companies would try to take advantage of consumers.
A month or so ago when all the generic tylenol got recalled, I went to the website, and checked our batch number. it was on there, but when I tried to take it to the store to return it, they said the exact size I had was not on there list. So I went home, printed off the batch numbers, and took it back to the manager. It took a bit of talking, but eventually I got him to take it back when I explained I did not expect cash back, just store credit so I coudl get some tylenol that did not have metal in it.

Take the jar of peanut butter back to the commissary--I used to work at one and they'll gladly give you your money back. They won't lose any money from it because the Peter Pan company will reimburse them.
Make sure the lid is still with it!! That's the most important part!!

I have a 40oz jar of the Great Value with the starting numbers 2111. I'm taking it back to the store today and demanding a full refund or a new jar without the 2111.

I was able to return my jar yesterday at my local grocery store. No hassle, the jar was 1/2 empty but they didn't care. I was gladly given a refund. No questions asked. I live in South Texas by the way.

I think most stores are taking them back...take it back where you got it.
OR
after the scare is over, write Peter Pan a letter expressing your disappointment. Do you know how they handle complaints against their product? With coupons for free product!! (any company will do this, not just ones with salmonella in their foods.)
