Speaking from experience, our house smelled terrible after filling with smoke from the garage. The insurance paid to have the house professionally cleaned. The cleaners washed the walls down with a solution that you can buy at the hardware store, I think that it is called TSP. This is the only thing that will cut the soot and smell. Even though you might not see it, you do have soot too from the smoke. After the walls are cleaned, then it is best to repaint. The furniture, drapes and carpets had to be replaced, could not get the smell out. even after they were professionally cleaned . Do not forget to have the air ducts professionally cleaned as well, or the next time you turn on your heater or air, you will fill the house back up with the smoke smell. The insurance paid for everything, less our deductible
