The Aquarium is located in "Museum Campus" which houses the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium and Soldier Field (where the Bears play). This is also quite close to the convention center, McCormick Place. Right now the 2007 Auto Show is there. The next public event is the IKC Dog Show, from Feb. 23 through Feb 26. After that it's ChevyVette Fest on March 3.
There are no independent restaurants in the area -- that is they are all in the four attractions. If you're feeding hungry kids they're fine, but if you're looking for a fine dining experience it leaves a lot to be desired. Probable the best of the bunch is the Corner Bakery inside the Field Museum. The Museum also has a McDonalds.
The Museum of Science and Industry is too far to walk! Even on a nice day. Please don't attempt it, especially in this weather. If you want to visit this museum, you can catch a bus (#6) from the corner of 11th and Columbus which is an express bus down to Hyde Park.

There are two museums immediately next to the Shedd Aquarium: The Field Museum of Natural History (which has Sue the Tyrannosaur) and the Adler Planetarium. Both are good museums. The area is known as the Museum Campus.
The Museum of Science and Industry is not close at all. It is 50 blocks away in Hyde Park on the South Side. It is a great museum and you can easily catch a cab.
The museums have restaurants inside (the aquarium has a nice sit down place, as well as McD and little cafe type places in the Field Museum) but you'd have to walk across Grant Park and into the Loop to go to anywhere that is not inside the Museums. This is not such a long walk.
Also the Art Institute is on the far side of Grant Park from the Shedd Aquarium. It's one of the best Art Museums in the world, and again, it is not next door, but a reasonable walk from the Museum Campus (Field, Shedd, Adler).
If you plan on going to more than one museum, check into getting a Citypass. It's a good deal.

The Shedd Aquarium is right on the lake and next to the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum is right there too. Field Museum has the dinosaur Sue and the Shedd has a really nice shark room. The Museum of Science and Industry is about 30 minutes away by car south of there so it is not a walkable commute. They do have a McDonalds in the Field Museum but I don't think there are too many restaurants in the area.

The Museum of Science and Industry is a long walk. Much closer, on the museum campus are the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum, which are very close to the Shedd Aquarium. There are some restaurants in the museums that aren't bad.
Here's a map:

The Field museum is right next door, they share the driveway so to speak.
Another museum in a walking distance is Chicago Art Institute.
All others are a bit further away and you'd have to take transportation, especially in this cold spell that we're under.

There are several museums right next to the aquarium, including the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium. If you walk east on Roosevelt a few blocks, you'll arrive at Michigan Avenue and Wabash Avenue, both of which have several restaurants (I recommend Yolk, at 1120 S. Michigan, for breakfast beforehand.)
