Happens a lot - initial test is negative, subsequent test positive.

A home pregnant test can actually fail for a number of reasons. It is VERY VERY rare to get a false positive, but common to get a false negative for several reasons - most commonly, the hormone levels just aren't high enough yet to register on the test, or your urine many be over-diluted because you have consumed too much water in an effort to make yourself pee.

Other reasons could be that the test strip is either over saturated or not saturated enough to work correctly, that the test strip is out of date, that the test has been exposed to very high temperatures and become ineffective, the test strip has been contaminated by skin oils by being handled incorrectly, or that the test is simply a dud.

If a test returns negative, we always recommend that patients wait 48 hours and re-test (provided their period hasn't started) and if they get a second negative test visit the clinic for blood work. Blood tests are more conclusive.

I didn't get a clear positive until I was about a week late. I got some faint negatives, but after quite a long time, so they could have been interpreted as evaporation lines.
