you do not need to go through SF at all to get from LA to Sonoma. Only if you take scenic, long Highway 101.

Option 1 - You would take I - 5 north all the way to Lodi area, take highway 12 west to fairfield, 80 west to 12 west again to napa, then 29 north and then 12 west again. Be careful about high way 12 though. it kind of snakes around and splits up into a couple different highways. Follow signs that say Napa on it.

Option 2 - you can take I-5 north to modesto, then 580 west, to 680 north to 780 west to 80 east, 37 west to 29 north to 12 west.

personally I avoid highway 580 at all costs, it is usually conjested with traffic all the time, day or night, during rush hour commutes. And usually take the first option.

Try to avoid being in the San Francisco/Sonoma area between 4-6 PM if at all possible.

There are some wonderful wineries in Sonoma and great places to stay. Enjoy!

Take 5 north from LA and come into the bay area through the East bay on 580, however no matter what way you go there will be traffic coming through they Bay Area..there always is ..no matter what..unless you get lucky somehow..

Follow the traffic north-west and you can't miss it.
