without having another fish in the tank how can a gold fish have something that appears to be an egg? we have had the fish almost 7 months and thought it was sick so got a smaller tank with nothing in it to keep an eye on him and out of the blue this white thing appeared at the bottom of the tank. the water is bran new and was cleaned out last night but is this normal???

Well, females do develop eggs without the presence of a male, but it is unusual for them to just lay one of them, so I doubt that it is an egg.

Was the white thing fuzzy, like a ball of cotton? Sometimes if a piece of food doesn't get eaten, it grows mold on it and floats around.
