I don't think you can just find a hero, but if you're looking for people who are inspiring if you find some well written stories or biolgraphies of people who have accomplished something, and if you watch some programs like American Experience or some of the PBS programs on people of great accomplishment (recently there has been one, "The Forgotten Genius" about Percy Julian, the grandson of slaves who grew up to be a famous and accomplished chemist) you can easily find inspiring people.

Whenever PBS has a program on people during the beginnings of America or during the civil war you should watch. There's usually inspiration in those. If you go to the library and ask the librarian for a non-dry story of historical figures or present day people of accomplishment she/he can probably recommend a book you'll find inspiring.

Ask at the library or video store if there are movies about the lives of inspiring or accomplished people. Even if the movie is a really old one (like the Madame Curie story that was done in, I think, the 1940's), and even if it may not be completely accurate, it may make you want to know more about that person.

If you're looking for hero material you have to go where the stories about hero-material people are - and that is books, PBS, and movies about real people. Don't approach things like you're looking for a hero. Approach things as if you're only looking for an interesting story about someone real. Pay attention to the challenges these people had and the thing in their personality that helped them overcome those challenges.

If you make it a point to spend some time "where the hero-material people are" (in those books, watching those PBS shows, watching those movies about real people) you won't just run into one hero. You'll see that history and present day life are full of people who are "hero-material".

Its nice to have one hero, but its even nicer to realize that you live in a world so full of heroes and to spend some time thinking about those traits such people have had that have turned them from "regular people" into hero-material.

At the end of the day, only you can be your own hero. Nobody know you as well as you do. Nobody will ever care about you as much as your should care about yourself.

I know that sounds cynical, but it's actually a wonderful thing to love and respect yourself.
