My parents are giving me too many issues and controlling my life completely at the age of 20. I can't handle it anymore. I've suffered emotional and physical abuse and my boyfriend dumped me because my parents made his and his family's life hell. I want to get legal action against my mother who is causing all the issues. Please help.

I'm 600kms away from them and they still control my life. I'm studying at the moment at Pretoria University, RSA. My mom has threatened to get a Private Investigator to find out if i still communicate with my X or even to take me back to Durban. They are making my life hell!

I will only be of legal age when Im 21. Then I will be able to do what i want but a year is too long for me and im still financially independent of them.

I'm assuming you meant your still financially "dependent on them" from the statement unfortunately still.
We, in the US, think of our children being adults at age 18 where other countries may differ, but we still try to give them advise on their lives. Some parents go to extremes. It's hard enough to continue studies and deal with abuse in any form and to ruin your relationship with your boyfriend must seem more than you can handle. Like some have said here, in the States you can get an emancipation from your parents or legal guardian if your under the age of 18, it is basically the same thing as divorcing your parents, but it is not something that is done in a month or two, by the time the courts would award it you could very well be 21. If your serious about taking legal action against your mother then by all means go to your schools guidance councilor, ask them to help you or go to your nearest magistrate, someone should be able to help you file the necessary papers restraining her from interfering with you and your activities. Sometimes a person has to go to extremes to make a point but once your mother realizes your serious about this she may back off on her own without any further action on your part.

Cut them out of your life, ignore any communication, hang up if she calls, throw away any letters. If a private investigator turns up ignore it as well, who cares if she knows what you're doing? She can't do anything about it.
She hasn't done anything yet that warrants legal action, so I would leave that to the last straw. You might want to see a laywer and see if you can get a court order to keep her from contacting you on the basis of stalking. See if you can get some free legal advice from a reputable source in your country as the laws will be different in each country.

You don't need any legal action against your parents - you are over 18 years old. You can move, get your own life, don't keep in touch, etc. There are many things you can do because you are an adult. They have no say or control over you at this point. If you are living with them - then you have a problem. You need to get out of the house. Get some roomates and rent a place and start your ADULT life.

In regard to Pikachu's comments...in the U.S. pregnancy is NOT a valid reason for emancipation in any state. In fact, it makes it much more difficult to get emancipated. Even if a minor has a valid reason for emancipation, it still won’t be granted unless they met EVERY other requirement for it…and there are MANY requirements.
Of course, in the U.S. this wouldn’t be an issue because at 18 you are automatically emancipated. Apparently, however, you’re not in the U.S. (if you were I’d advise you to get a restraining order against your parents), and since I don’t know the laws of other countries… But, if you state WHERE you are, maybe someone else does know them.

from this i am guessing that you don't live in the united states. so let me tell you how it is here. you can get emancipated if something like abuse is going on or you are pregnant. and you do need a lawyer. and sometimes it won't work. it depends on the situation because the law is very black and white in cases like this.
although if you are independent of them that will help you out because it shows you don't need them.
or you can wait, it's hard i know how it is i went through all this when i turned 17. and i was also supporting myself, not even living with them and i still couldn't get emancipated. hang in there.

you can't divorce your parents at the age of 20, you are already of legal age...get a job, move out on your own....perhaps you are causing your own issues.
