There is a saying; "Charity begins at home".
I'd say charity is a very humane object. What you give in charity is in reality a gift from God which comes back to you a hundredfold. But as is also said, "Let not your right hand know what your left has done". Therefore charity is not for your personal impression to be made set for all others to see. Then you are being charitable for progressing yourself and it loses it worth. Also to give in charity, firstly you must begin at home. Ask forgiveness or give forgiveness to your closest ones, then you give your gift to God. If this first stage is very difficult to accomplish, at least an effort has to be made before you undertake this great sacrament of charity. God will bless you immensely and multifold. As I said start at home, then your community and only then outwards.
