Having posted many questions on here,it always amazes me how humour is lost on many Americans. We all know this is just a little bit of fun, but why is it Americans go to the extent of sounding like they are spoilt children when answering.Americans please laugh at yourselves and please dont threaten to "pop a cap in my bum" like one of your fellow countrymen tried.

Actually, you worry me. You have asked nine questions, ALL about Americans and all in an insulting tone. Sorry, but I don't find you funny either. And before you hit the button for 'Insulting other Participants', this is a geniune response to your question - Americans do not display a sense of humour towards you because you give them nothing to laugh about!
Edit: Fair enough, if your questions are for 'research' - why then do you want to raise a laugh from them? Are you not expecting these questions to work just a little too hard for you?

A joke starts something like this "Two guys walk in a bar...." An insult starts something "Why are all Americans....(Derogatory expletive of your choice)?" I am an American and I have a great sense of humor, but I also know when I have been insulted. I try not to make broad generalization or overly derogatory comments about other countries and their people. I cannot say I always receive the same politeness in return. Bashing America has become a sport in the world. You are free to hold whatever opinions you choose, but you do not get to insult, call it a joke and then reasonably expect that people will not be offended by it. Take whatever you are thinking is a joke and apply it to your own country, then suppose an American said it and tell me if you would still be so cavalier in your opinion regarding it. If the answer is yes then I would be forced to draw the conclusion that you have no national pride.

I lost alot of my innocense alongside my NATO compatriots in the early 90's, so I get where you're coming from. However, Political Correctness makes it fairly impossible to laugh at anything, anymore. Some one might get upset and have to schedule extra sessions with their therapist, because they think I'm out to attack their color, ethnicity, or whatever...
I find it more than a little humorous that the US and the UK are as close as they are, given the foundation of the US. But, having grown up in the 70's, I also found British TV Programming to be fun, even if a bit dry, from time to time. Hang with me, mate. We'll do alright. I promise!

Now that's a two part question.
The first part of the question philosophers have been trying to answer since man first walked upright. Perhaps some day science may give us the answer.
As for the second part of the question: "are many Americans always so serious?" The answer to that is yes.
Cheers from across the pond.

As an American, I completely 110% agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I love being an American, I love all the things that I'm able to do in my country, but I'm also fully aware that Americans have RUINED the name for Americans. I don't care if I get 100 thumbs down for this, it's the TRUTH.
I think there are a lot of things about the American culture that don't make sense to those who are non-Americans and that's perfectly normal. I don't understand all of the simplistic things of other cultures either. However, I'm currently living in the Netherlands and my living here has only reaffirmed my view on my fellow people. Will I ever give up my citizenship? Not a chance in hell! Do I still think Americans have a lot to learn from other countries? I most certainly do.
I love how I can walk around this country with my family and not have to worry about listening to people speak atrocious "ebonics," wear their pants down to their knees, waddle around because their ankles can't support the weight that's crushing them... there are so many "stereotypes" of Americans that foreigners have of us, and sadly for the most part, they're all true! Why? Because Americans have proven them correct time and time again.
Instead of walking away from fights, we threaten people with violence... our OWN people! We stigmatize EVERYTHING under the damn sun and over censor everything. We teach our children that every part of our body is taboo by blurring out even the smallest scene of a bare butt. It's a BUTT!
I could go on for the rest of my life, but I'll spare myself the grief that I know I'll get from this. It's ok though, because I know it's all the truth and I have no problem with the truth.

I think it's just a difference in the senses of humour that our nations have. We (UK) seem to appreciate irony and sarcasm whereas some Americans seem unable to understand it and take things very literally. Of course this is a sweeping generalisation and I'm sure there's some really funny Americans who do appreciate our strange sense of humour. And if they don't, then that's their problem.

well i just wanted to thank you for the giggle and put in my 2 cents on the topic.

Oh come on, we laugh at ourselves all the time, and anyone who doesn't think so doesn't know any of us on a personal level. But why do you hate Americans and then try to pretend that you are only having a "little bit of fun"?

They're overly sensitive at the moment, due to the international controversies. But then, some people are just too serious all the time - maybe these are the ones that you notice, rather than the normal ones.

I have no idea...frankly I agree with you. Perhaps it's because their jobs depend on how they are even in their personal life? Most Americans are money hungry, I think they've forgotten what's really important in life, humour being one of them. I can say that not all are, but those in the spotlight, yep.
