In his latter years, Johnny Cash released a series of albums under the title of The American Recordings on Rick Rubin's American label.

The Soundgarden cover, "Rusty Cage", I believe was on number 2. His most famous cover was his version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt", which was on Volume 4. There were 5 in total, with the possibility of a sixth to be released posthumously.

You're probably thinking of his most recent Best Of collection, which featured old classics and some of his most recent recordings.

Well, there's American 3, 4, 5 and 6 that are all like that. They all have covers of modern bands. I don't remember any Sound Garden, but #4 has a cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"

6 was released after his death, so not sure which you need.
