I would like to think that it's both. There are certain things which I believe are hard-wired in to you - things you like and dislike, things you may be allergic to, sexual preferences and soforth. That I would class as finding yourself.

There are also things which you discover or change your views on - you may start out having a strong opinion on something or someone and through your own thought processes or external influences change that opinion. I consider that to be creating yourself. Also, your chosen partner, career, dress sense etc are all choices which I don't believe are built in from the beginning.

Is there a difference? Every day is a gift for us to make the best use of, and one of the most important things to do is to let go of the past and look to today to create our world as we want it. We are able to choose and learn and experiment and love as freely as we allow ourselves to. The energy you put into making yourself a better person is the best you could expend. It will make the world a more beautiful place. You certainly can't change anyone else.
