Hello there.
Do they still have wet nurses?
Anyway, it is a mother who has given birth and will nurse your baby for you if for some medical reason you are not able to.
Breastmilk is so important that even a strangers milk is better than formula but ideally every mother should nurse her own baby. I do suppose that if for some medical reason (HIV mothers cannot nurse their babies) it would be better to have a wet nurse rather than to have to resort of feeding your baby formula.
I hope I have answered your question.
Take care.

A wet nurse may be employed if the birth mother of a baby is unable to breast-feed her infant for reasons such as:
drug use (prescription or illegal)
illness
death
insufficient production of breast milk.
unwillingness
Wet nurses have also been required following multiple births where the mother feels incapable of adequately nursing all of the children herself, though the breast would respond to demand, increasing in yields and volume to meet the need over a period of weeks.
Some wet nurses are also trained to serve as a midwife during childbirth.

A wet nurse is an old practise where a woman, not the birth mum, breast feeds a baby for a mum who wasn't able to . Now we have formula's of a high quality.

A wet nurse is a woman who you would hire to breast feed your baby in the event that you were unable to.
I am really not sure how often it happens anymore with so many people using formula. However, before formula was around, I think that it was fairly common... well, at least not uncommon.

like in Romeo and Juliet - Juliet had a wet nurse whom her mother had hired when juliet was a baby - the lady must have her own baby and be breastfeeding. The wet nurse then breastfeeds the other chilos as well as her own along with other nanny type duties

I knew a women who wasn t able to breast feed and since we had just had our newborn, I figured what harm could it do? so I let both babies latch on, let me tell you my nipples have never been so soar. I had to stop though because they weren t comfortable with the fact that I was a man. Some people are just ungrateful.

Pretty much what anyone else has said....but this woman does NOT have to be a mother. She can teach her body to lactate without ever been pregnant.
