Typically, the covers of magazines are classified in the following way:

COLOR: Almost all covers are full (photographic color). This is printed in what is called the "4-Color" process.

WEIGHT: Paper thickness is measured in "pounds per square inch" and covers use at least "80 Pound (#) Stock".

FINISH: Glossy or Matte (not shiny)

The average magazine like newsweek would use "4-color, 80# glossy" stock. Fashion magazines are often thicker and may use 120# stock.
