You really should see a doctor but on the way to the doctor you must control the bleeding, First apply direct pressure to the wound using a clean dressing, if the bleeding doesn't stop elevate your arm and then apply a bandage around your thumb.

First wash out the blood, dry it with a cloth, put Neosporin or any anti-biotic ointment with a q-tip on the cut, and then add a bandaid.
The bleeding will eventually stop. Bring some extra bandaids and anti-biotic ointment with q-tips to work just in case.
I REALLY advise you see a doctor as soon as possible but to stop the bleeding, do that for now.
If it still bleeds after that, you shouldn't go to work and see a doctor ASAP

the bleeding won't stop straight away so wash the wound, put some antibiotic, bandaid it, and maybe hold it up a little. see a doctor because with a wound like that there's a risk of infection, and if it's before the last thumb joint there's a possibility of a muscle or tendon being cut, which won't be good news for finger movement.

To slow the bleeding you need to hold your thumb above your heart. I know it probably sounds crazy, but it does help with stopping the bleeding. I suggest you get to a doctor asap. I did the same thing to mine and ended up with six stitches.

sounds fairly deep, you possibly need stitches even if it's just butterfly stitches.
Personally i'd go to A and E not work, just to get it sorted.
Only a Doctors examination could tell you about possible permanent damage, it depends how deep the cut is and exactly where on the thumb.
