Zone is good and free, but if you're not computer savvy you'll find it asks you questions you can't answer, and most people just have a tendency to say "yes, go ahead and access the internet" instead of "no, and if my program doesn't work I'll say yes next time".
If you're behind a router and have windows firewall you'll be relatively safe from outside attacks. Don't download sh*t you shouldn't! Spyware and stuff are like vampires -- once you invite them into your home, they can come in and make a mess.
Go to grc.com and run Shields Up. It's a website that's designed to attack your computer. If everything shows up "stealth" you're pretty safe from the windows holes that keep popping up.

Listen to Carella.
I've seen the comparison test between the top firewalls, and windows firewall is a joke.
I used Zone Alarm until last week, for years.
But the industry-rated firewall [free one that is] is Comodo. Review said it was as good as some subscription firewalls.
Nuff said?

it's ok as a basic firewall, but remember it's made by microsoft nothing that they touch is decent. you would be better having another firewall instead. google for the free zone alarm one if you don't want to pay. it does an excellent job.

I recommend using another product. I use either avg or zone alarm; depending on exactly what I want to accomplish. I would suggest probably zone alarm as its a very good firewall and decent anti virus.

Windows firewall is not the best firewall to have.
The windows firewall is weak, in the respect that it only monitors incoming traffic to your PC.
I would suggest you trying Zone Alarm >>> http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown

http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.
This is a free firewall used by techie types, it passes the leak test at Shields Up security site;
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc dialling out, sometimes thats the first indication you have a problem on your pc.
