just interested to see whether they actually do, after working hard on degree's etc....so companies actually bother?

Well, most of the places I've worked at, ask for references of people who I worked for or with, and usually they send a letter to verify I was employed. I know this because the companies I've worked at, and people I've worked for, usually call me and tell me the new companies have done it.

They always ask to verify that I've done what I've claimed. As I've never claimed to have done anything I haven't done, it isn't a problem for me. Although I have worked with people who have been marched out the door, for lying on a CV.

Of course! It's so easy to verify education and past positions that only a fool would falsify anything in a CV or resume.

Depending upon the sensitivity of the position that you're applying for, your CV may be subject to a rigorous vetting or may only have a few details verified.

Any significant discrepancies may result in an adverse hiring decision or termination of employment if the subterfuge is discovered after you are hired.
