Slow heart beat is worse. Fast heart beat can be slowed by medication and treatment. It is difficult to increase the pace of the heart if too slow. It could stop, altogether.

Yes a heart beat can be too slow. The normal heart rate is between 60 to 100 beats per minute. Often athletes will have a slower rate just because their bodies' are in good tune and the heart does not have to work nearly as hard when they are at rest. It is not uncommon for athletic people or smaller people to have a rate in the 50's. However a rate below 60 can indicate a problem with nerve conduction through the heart........this is especially true if the heart rate has changed from something that was once considered normal for this person. A rate below 40 is downright dangerous and can lead to dizziness, vertigo, and loss of consciousness. This can indicate a very serious disorder.

The normal beat is between 60 and 80 beats per minute when at rest. There is some variation on this and some people have a naturally slow heartbeat of 55 beats and others 85.

It's when there is a change to resting beat that there may be cause for concern....that is a significant and lasting change over a period of more than a couple of days.

Tachycardia (fast) is when the beat is over 100 at resting.

Unfit people and people who are stressed may have a faster than normal heartbeat that can be rectified when the problems are addressed.

A doctor should be consulted if there are any other symptoms or a change in your norm.

Hope that helps.

If your heart beat is slow because you are in excellent physical condition, that obviously is good. How ever, there are certain heart conditions that make the heart excessively slow or even pause. In these cases the heart may not pump enough blood which can lead to symptoms of heart failure (shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling etc.). A pace-maker is generally required to treat this.

It is possible to have both problems at the same time, to fast and two slow. Obviously, both don't occur simultaneously, but switch back and forth. In this case medications are given to slow the heart, and a pace-maker is placed to keep the heart rate adequate.

It depends on how slow is slow and what is causing it to be slow. I suggest you see your GP, you can have a very quick ECG at the hospital, takes 5 mns and it will show if you need further tests. A slow heart beat is normal if you are an athlete/incredibly fit. If you are not either of these and your rate is too slow then it could be related to some quite serious heart problems. But it really depends on how slow your heart beat really is. Have it checked! You can look it up on the internet - Brachycardia.

having a too slow heart rate can be just as dangerous as having a fast one, but i have to say that if you are very fit and athletic, it's not uncommon to have a slow heart rate and be perfectly healthy. I am a nurse and I've seen a few really fit, athletic guys come in who's heart rates where in the 50's and they where positively fine cardiac wise. now in the case of my mother and aunt whose hearts were found to be beating too slow and they both needed a pacemaker. just have a check-up to be sure. good luck and take care.

Bradycardia is what you are on about and a normal(?) heart beat rate is 60 - 74 per minute.
Bradycardia can be very serious in some people, but not all. Athletes + fit folk can have a normal of 45 - 60 per minute..... but are you an athlete?

Slow heart rate is definately a good thing if you are fit and healthy and getting plenty of exercise.

Athletes have a resting heart rate between 30-40 beats per mins.

As long as it is usual for one to have a slow heart rate and not something that is sudden, it is a good thing.

If you are doing cardio-activity, a fast heart beat is great because it is pumping blood faster and telling your body you are active.

But at a resting position if your heart beat is fast, it might irregular.

But after taking a break from cardio-activity, it will continue to beat fast and then slow down. Once you are at a calm position your heart should be at a normal beat

heart beats can be Too, slow, but that is if you are really Ill, and I mean really Ill.

other than that a slower heartbeat is much better than a fast one, because the heart muscle relaxes more :)
