I heard ealier today that if a petition was signed by enough people, we could force a general election. Apparently the number of signatures needed is less than the amount of signatures on the road tax petition. Does anyone know any more about this?

Awareness - that's the key to making politicians sit up and take notice.

Perhaps if those of us who are sick to the teeth with the antics of our present government were to put stickers on the rear windows of our cars stating
'General Election Now - Blair, Brown, Prescott et al OUT!'
they might all just sit up and take notice!

For the US visitors to Yahoo Q&A our current Prime Minister has introduced a 'petition section' to the No 10 web site [that's No 10 Downing St where he hangs out] It's not working too well at present as over 1,514,347 have signed against the planned vehicle tracking and road charging system planned at a cost of £200 per car and that's just for the installation of the tracking device in every car!

A general election. Do you mean a national election? What country are we talking about? If you are speaking of a local election in the US than sometimes a petition can put a specific item on the ballot. If it is a big enough item they might bring it to a vote by calling for an election earlier than the normally scheduled one.

only a vote of no confidence in parliament can bring about a general election... this would force the PM to ask the queen to dissolve parliament..

you have your say via the ballot box not a flimsy piece of paper..
perhaps you should think carefully before voting next time or perhaps you didn't vote at all thinking it was a waste of time... not so much a waste of time now is it if you want to change the government..

That statement is FALSE. Only the Prime Minister can call a general election.

This is not true. The opposition parties would never do anything else than organise petitions!!

And the silly little thumb makes absolutely no difference...tee hee

I don't see why not, but it would probably take a ton of petitions followed by voting in Congress.

It depends on your location. Consult your local election board.
