Hey Rebecca.

Your fish are not dying of old age they live for years, not months.

It's hard to tell if you are feeding them too much, but the answer is that you probably are, most people feed their fish more then they really need. Feed them once per day, and make sure you watch the meal so you know they are eating all of it. For smaller fish you only need to feed what they will eat in a minute or two, once per day.

My suggestion to you is to go to the fish store and by a test solution for Ammonia and Nitrite. Instructions come with it on how to use it. Do this ASAP. These two toxins will kill your fish quickly and efficiently.

In the mean time, stop feeding your fish altogether for a few days until you figure out what's wrong with the tank. This fasting will not harm them.

Uneaten food will foul the water very quickly. I have read it is ok to feed them every other day. You can tell if the water is bad because it will look very cloudy and really stink. Rule of thumb is all they can eat in about a five mniute period. I would do a complete water change to see if it will save the rest of your fish.

forget the water testing and just gravel vacuum and change about 1/2 of it every other day for about a week.

fish should eat all their food in about a minute if you feed them twice a day. its best to study up on your fish and find out where their stomachs are so you can see if they are getting full. it is usually right in front of the anal fin -- a fin at the bottom back -- the bottom front are called ventrals or pelvic fins.

the amount of food you feed to your fish should be done in ten minutes only, if not...it's too much. Tropical fish is fed only once a week, in my case, i feed them every other day only but just enough amount for them to be healhty.

fish only need feeding once a day if you over feed them the tank will become dirty very quick .the fish bloat and float upside down.some times fish just die with no warning.its hard to starve fish as they eat there own poo.
