Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was Rs 75/- Each one contributed Rs.25/-.

The waiter took the bill to the cashier.

The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of Rs.5/- & asked the waiter to return them Rs.5/-.

Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute Rs 5 among 3 persons?

He kept Rs 2 in his pocket & gave one rupee to each one of the 3 persons.

So initially each one had contributed Rs.25. Now as they are given 1 rupee back, their contribution reduces to Rs 24.

They all contributed Rs 24 -- that is 24x3=72 & 2 rupees are in the waiters pocket.

The total becomes 74. But they had paid Rs 75.

Where is the remaining 1 rupee?.

The 72 Rs they paid in total includes the 2 Rs that the waiter took, so adding 72 + 2 is nonsensical.

They paid in total 75 Rs. The cashier gave back 5 Rs, the waiter kept 2 Rs and returned 3Rs

So of the original 75 Rs that was paid, the friends have 3, the waiter has 2 and the cashier has 70

It is all in the way you add it up. Here your teacher has brought in multiplication at the 3 x 24 Rs point.

Just explain that they have each paid 25 Rs (Totalling 75 Rs) then the waiter has took 5 Rs, paid each man back 1 Rs and kept 2 Rs.

Therefore-: We have 70 Rs (i.e. waiter has take 5 Rs) + 1Rs + 1Rs + 1 Rs (the 3 x 1 Rs given back) + 2 Rs (the waiter kept)

70 + 3 + 2 = 75 Rs (there is no missing rupee - it is a trick by multiplying the 24 Rs by 3)

Ask him does he know about the 3 nuns who buy the sewing machine - it's exactly the same trick using different numbers.

You add money that is expense with money that is revenue.
When you wrote "24 x 3 = 72 rupees " you forgot to mention the 5 rupees the cashier spent to reduce each contribution down to 24 Rs and to give the tip.
So , all in all, money went out of the friends 's pocket : 25 each and also out of the cashier's register : 5 Rs in the reverse direction , that account for the refund + the tip.
When you add 72 + 2 , you add money flowing in opposite directions.

Cashier gave 5 rs discount on the total bill amt

75-5= 70.

So 70/3= 23.33(Each one's share)

Now Waiter is giving back one rupee each from the 5 rs wat he has.

24.33*3=73. Remaining 2 is with the waiter.

By giving waiter 2 rs, all 3 take back only 67ps instead of 1 rupee.

I think this is right!

they should pay 70.because of discount(75-5=70).each person payed 24.so they all paid 72. and the waiter put 2 in his pocket so 70 remain.(72-2=70)

24*3=72 72-2=70
75-5=70 70=70

Classic trick question.
Now you had the 5, 3 is subtracted at the final balance, though 2 is added. The comparison between the 75 and the 74 is not logical, since 75 is the money the friends payed, and the 74 is how much the friends payed at the (with part of the 5 added and part of it added). It is really complicated, in my opinion.
