The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once.” --- A Einstien

Yours is a rather philosophical question. Most we can say is that time exists because there is change, but of course it is another way to name a concept. In physics, time is no more than a parameter needed in equations to describe phenomena, and it can be reduced to the comparison of changing phenomena with some specific movements, specially periodic (pendulums in ancient times, atomic vibrations now, etc.). In modern theories of physics (from relativistic theories) time parameter must be united together with the spatial dimensions for the equations be right. Thug it does not mean that time coordinate has the same nature that the spatial ones.
The other intricate aspect of time is that called the "time arrow", that characteristic felt by us, with everything advancing from the past to the future, never turning back. This is still a mystery for science, but it has been related to the entropy, a quality of physical complex systems to go from a more ordered status to a less ordered one. It is supposed that our observations of such phenomena (we see a glass that brokes into pieces, but never pieces of a broken glass that go back to form it again), and perhaps we perceive the same type of processes in our neuronal internal brains.
Very recently the explanation for the world being in a relatively ordered status, to make possible the "arrow of time", resides in the nature of the big-bang.
But if we ought to resume the question, we should say that this is a non clearly solved question, and chances are that it will not be solved never.
I apologize for my poor English, I hope I made me understood.

Get your hands on "the power of Now", by Eckhart Tolle.
He shows you how to free yourself from psychological time, which is just a mental construct.
In reality, there is only movement, or change.
There is only one moment that ever existed and that will ever exist, it's Now.
Nothing ever happened in the past, it happened Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future, it will happen Now.
The mental projection of the future isn't real. And it's something you cannot deal with. You can only deal with the present, and luckily it's the Only thing that is Real.
Therefore worrying is totally unnecessary, and all of man's problems are just a form of collective madness.

How do you know that time exists at all? It can't be proven that
such a thing as time exists.
Time is just a way to measure the changing of things. We all
think of time passing by us, but maybe we pass by time.

Same way as Height, Width and Depth.
Time is a forth dimension in universe.
Without time you cant measure a moment.
