George Galloway apparently mentioned it on his radio show the other night.

Is it because thousands of scots are moving south for a better standard of living, or are there other reasons?

Scots die younger than other Brits. Heart disease and cancer rates are high. Other than that I don't know what it could be because Scotland is not a backwater.

pay interest. before in 1707, Scotland joined with England (and Wales techincally) to type the dominion of serious Britain. did you recognize the regular purpose of this? it is because after Scotland's disastrous attempt to colonize elsewhere, through the Darian Scheme which for this reason lost Scotland extremely some it is wealth, it knew it is probably not a significant international potential with out the help of britain. It had failed at coming up an Empire, and it had a small economy, with a weak military. It knew that the in trouble-free words way that it would nicely be wealthy will be to hitch with England. It sacrificed independence for money. and then what occurred? The Scottish enlightenment, an excellent empire, wide salary, and Scotland grow to be wealthy lower back because of the business Revolution, which may were no longer a danger to finance with out the wealth and medical understanding of a few thing of the united kingdom as an entire. So if, extremely below three hundred years later, some thing of the united kingdom makes a decision to apply the oil found through Scotland, for the great thing about the finished union, somewhat than using it to provider Scotland's inhabitants of extremely 5 million human beings, and also you're taking position to be annoyed through this, purely imagine of it as compensation why do not you.

The real reason is that since the Highland Clearances the Scots have gone all over the world and in many cases made a good life and naturally sent for their relations. This still goes on to-day. The other reason is that being governed by the Scottish Parliament is enough to make any one leave the country.

Don't know where Mr Galloway got his info from but that is a load of rubbish. Scotland is not the only country in the world losing population. Russia is losing almost 800,000 people a year. It is so bad and worrisome there the gov't has stopped allowing foreigners to adopt Russian babies. France is the only western European country that is gaining population by having enough babies to replace the present population. That is according to an article in the International Herald Tribune a few weeks ago. Mr. Galloway is full of hot air and only saying that for political ends so don't listen to the blowhard. He's full of Sh*t

Scotland isn't the only country. Belgium, Lithuania etc also have declining populations. The demographic problem in Scotland is due to a number of reasons.
advances in medicine. Population lives longer putting a strain on the young who have to pay more into keeping an aging population. The young have families later or not at all - low birthrate due to career/economic factors.
A tradition of emigration and low immigration - The Scottish exec is actively searching for immigrants from the baltics and Poland. They also want Scots to return.
Scotland's health record and poverty compared to the rest of the UK.

Well he's wrong then.
Many small to medium sized countries are experiencing a decreasing population. Migration is a big thing everywhere. Many countries are experiencing a decreasing birth rate. For some this is even being translated into a decreasing and ageing population.

Reasons?
1. better opportunities elsewhere.
2. increased education and women's rights mean women are having babies later, and less of them.
3. population pressures are being felt in many countries and people just cannot afford lots of children

Scottish reasons?
A people known for wanderlust have an open border to one of the worlds major economies, and one of the worlds most welcome passports.
