If you have the OEM version of Windows, the license applies to the motherboard, chip etc combination so you should be able to transfer XP to a new hard drive.
But 256mb and 1 gig are used to measure RAM, not the size of the hard drive. It sounds like you have been given a RAM chip.
It may work with your motherboard or it may not, the only way to find out is try it and see. if it works it will improve the performance of your pc, and you can use it as well as your 256mb RAM.
But RAM is not a hard drive; it won't affect XP at all except to make it faster.

the reason any replica of Microsoft homestead windows XP chews up not uncomplicated force area is that it has a wide database that means that there are more than a number of drivers that get put in for differant products which incorporates scanners, mice printers etc. that is why once you plug in a gadget which incorporates a printer homestead windows XP immediately is favourite with what gadget is pluged in to the USB port for examole. it is called Plug And Play. And thats why XP and Vista opt for a lot area. God the others don't have any clue The question Is why XP makes use of a lot area?

I am assuming that it is a RAM stick that you are talking it. This is your random access memory and upgrading it from 256 to 1 gig will make a world of difference to you if it works. If you look on the stick it should tell what size it is for ex. PC4200sdram. You can do one of two things from here: 1. install it in your motherboard and re-boot to see if it works OR 2. look up your computer model # (google or whatever) and see what size it would take to upgrade yours. Then you can match and see if they are compatible without tearing into your computer. If you are looking to do it yourself it is not a big deal, but if you are looking to pay someone to install it then it would be a good idea to make sure it is compatible. I know you can verify COMPAQ and HEWLITT PACKARD on hpshopping.com for the correct size stick.

i dont think theres any point putting xp on there, if its 1GB. because as soon as you install xp on it, your probably left with 200MB, which is nothing. don't waste your time
