I don't think the masses have ever been prosperous .You're probably looking at some obscure tribe in Africa or suchlike who remained undiscovered and blissfully ignorant of the consumer society but just happily passed the days with a little huntin' and fishin' and then trotted back home to the mud hut where the missus cooked a decent dinner out of the pot,the phone never rang with some eejit trying to sell you double glazing and you knocked back your own native brew which came from an equally obscure tree in the forest and hence was free.
There were no tax returns to fill in ,there was a free disco round the fire every Saturday where Bill and the Bongos gave a good account of themselves and the extent of political correctness was to offer the guy sitting next to you a drag on the smoke you'd just rolled.
