In a two wheel drive car one one pair of wheels (either Rear or Front) is connected directly to the engine, mostly through a shaft. In a four wheel drive car both the pairs are connected directly with the engine.
If you look below normal bus or truck you would see one long shaft is connected to the centre of the real wheel pair. If you look below a Shaktiman - military truck - you would see two shafts - one to the rear pair and other to the front wheel pair are connected.

Two wheel drive means that the vehicle is propelled forward (under engine power) with only the two rear wheels. 4 wheel drive means that the vehicle CAN be propelled by all 4 wheels. This can be accopmlished by the shifting of a lever or the pushing of a button on the dashboard. The "difference" is that 4 wheel drive will permit being able to drive in "off road" conditions. This is quite handy fro muddy roads, rough terrain, and other difficult road conditions. It is NOT a license to get out on the road and act like a fool. Ice conditions are no more favorable to a driver in a 4 wheeler then a knowledgeable driver in a 2 wheeler. It just means when you screw up in a 4 wheeler you will look more foolish.

Drive means, the engine power is transmitted to those wheel who propell the vehical.
2 Wheell Drive : Means only front pair OR rear pairs of wheels are given torque from engine.
4 wheel drive : Means BOTH the front pair and rear pairs of wheels are given torque from engine.
If your rear wheels are trapped in mud / sand, and yours is a rear driven 2 wheel drive, then probably you cant get out of mud because wheels will only rotating without tractive efforts.
But, if your vehical is equippled with 4 wheel drive, then if your front wheels are on dry surface, by engaging the front wheel drive, the tractive pull can be applied by front wheels.

According to laws of physics, rear wheels of a vehicle are efficient in imparting motion and front wheels are efficient in braking. So, normally the engine of a vehicle is connected to the rear two wheels and the front wheels are left free to steer. hence, it is a two wheel drive. But for all terrain vehicles, which travel in difficult areas, all the four wheels are connected to the engine! that's a four wheel drive. imagine rear wheels of your car stuck in a pit. you can't come out! but if u have a 4 wheel drive the front wheels will still power you out of truoble.

2WD - force created by engine is transferred to 2 wheels.
4WD - force created by engine is transferred to 4 wheels.
2WD is typically more fuel efficient whereas 4WD gives increased traction in mud or snow.
