Physical memory is what you, well "physically" have installed on the motherboard - called RAM. You can increase that, well, by installing more memory or larger DIMMs of course!

Virtual memory is something you can adjust in XP, however. By default, it is set to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed. This is the default because that's usually enough to cover "system dumps" when a PC crashes if you have Windows setup to create a dump file. There's usually no need to change this, so I'd be curious as to why you'd want to.

But if you really think you need more than that, then head over to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Settings (under Performance) -> Advanced. You may need to change your Control Panel to the "classic view" to see System. Once there, you'll see the virtual memory paging file option to "change" at the bottom.

UPDATE

Contrary to the post below, you can adjust the virtual memory however you see fit. The max doesn't "have to be" 1.5 times. That's just recommended for the reason I explained above. Personally though, I would just leave it there.

Physical memory is a hardware upgrade.

Virtual ram can be 'Increased' under the settings of
'Right click my computer, properties, then advanced tab, advanced again, then the virtual memory setting.

go to control panel-performance and maintenance-adjust visual effects-then click the advanced tab and at the lowest you can see a virtual memory stuff.... click change set an initial size REMINDER. the maximum size must be 1.5x larger than the initial size: IS: 100 MS: 250. set it. restart and youre good to go...

virtual yes, right click "My computer select props, advanced, performance, advanced settings. increase the size of your page file. physical mem is just that ! buy ram..
