The Bok De la Rey one? Has anyone heard his song? I personally have not, but there has been a big hoo haa over it. Seems like everyone has their own opinions on what he meant. Is it a fight against the struggle? An innocent song? I don't know and don't care. If it makes him happy then so be it. He apparently posts on white supremist forums. I say apparently because I cannot confirm that fact.
Everyone has their own hang ups and interpretations of things, so I think we should let him be. I know one thing for sure though, he is laughing all the way to the bank!

Alf, I will look for those sites (I read about it in the You) and will post it.

Vango, I asked because I wanted to know what other people think! I don't care, that's right.

Also wanted to add, I don't think the ANC is scared of the Afrikaaners.

I just watched it on YouTube and I seem to agree with Alf and gunner. I don't think that the ANC is worried about it at all. Not from what I read in the newspaper. He is making headlines, good on him.
I can see how the song would be interpreted as ambiguous, it could be said that there are some underlying issues in it. However, IMO, we should just take it for what it is, enjoy the beat (which is lekker) and not try to over analyse.

The song is De La Rey and is performed by Bok Van Blerk. It deals with an historic period in South Africa and a leader at the time, De La Rey. The song is merely a recounting of that period and the leader mentioned. The song was never intended as a clarion call to arms. The government has not slammed the song nor the artist but have rightly expressed concerns that members of the white supremacist minority in South Africa will interpret the song as some kind of call to arms, even as some have already done. The misguided right wing racists at the The Right Perspective blog as well as Jan Lamprecht of AfricanCrisis have both made it out to be a call to uprising. So too have those at Stormfront.org. The writer and performer Bok Van Blerk denies what the right wing sites claim about the song – that he wrote it to incite an uprising. This can be seen to be true as the singer also performs a song in praise of the non-white SA rugby player Bryan Habana. If Bok Van Blerk was a racist he would not have written the song praising Habana.

Glynnis from what I have read it is a song that commemorates a Boer General of more than a 100 years ago who led Afrikaaners into battle against the British. It has become popular with young Afrikaaners who are struggling in trying to find an identity in the new South Africa as they were not a realistic part of the apartheid years.
The ANC have totally over reacted to the song making accusations that it is a call to arms and therefore treason. This has been denied by the singer/songwriter but it seems the ANC are paranoid about an Afrikaaner uprising given their history. (Look at the treatment of Boeremag prisoners). In response some Afrikaaners have commented that the ANC does not murmur a word about Zuma and his singing at every public meeting of " Bring me my machine gun" which undoubtedly is a song to commit genocide against Whites.
Hope this explains it and where are those White supremacist sites? I would like to see one and probably have a laugh.

Gunner - You seem to have a problem in processing and understanding information. Perhaps English is not your first language. Nowhere did I say the song was banned and go and re read what Pallo Jordan said instead of giving a half truth as an answer.

Innocenti- You give me great cause for concern with your intellectual deficit. Go and research the history of " Bring me my gun" and stop repeating the drivel that has been handed down to you.

Ag, Glynis...If you you don't care, why do you ask?
Hahahahahaha! It's not Bok De la Rey. It's Bok van Blerk and the song is De la Rey. And to another answerer, no, there are no reference to race in the lyrics.
I can easily believe the paranoia of the ANC and their supporters - they're sh_t scared of the Afrikaners.
For once, I agree with Alf. So far he's given the best answer.
At least he made sure of his facts...

alf is partly correct......however where he gets his crap about the anc and the gov been worried about it only he would no.....firstly it has never been banned, secondly the minister of arts and culture said on national tv that he likes the song and the gov has no problem with it and that he actually hopes that the singer can achieve huge success with it both locally and internationally

Freedom of speech right? even in artistic form...
south african artists need recognition. no one even listens to Niemand and Niemand by far, to me, is the best...
As for Zuma and his song...pls, get a life. the lyris are constant and all he saying is " bring my machine gun"...not "bring my machine gun so i can shoot white people". And since it arised around his rape trial...which didnt involve a white woman, i dont see why he'd sing something so out of context. what it plainly means (since its a metaphor to zulu iliterate people) is, i'm ready to fight, whatever force is hindering my life at this point...so bring me my battle gear so i fight this war and hopefully defeat...(the war at that moment being his trial)

as for Bok De La Rey... i'm not complaining (",), every race is deservant of stars and music they enjoy, as much as Afrikaaners like this dude...let it be.
