We have lots of space and two kids that like to have animals to nurture. And we have a lot of leftovers and food related waste. Ideally some chickens would be good, but because of the avian flu there are restrictions on keeping birds in Europe. Any ideas?

Get a nice big MUTT from the pound. they are used to eating anything and will eat it all. I had a dog that would eat anything you put in his bowl. It has to be a big dog tho, because little dogs have sensitive stomachs. Of course you will need to feed him a few cups of dog food too, to make sure he is getting everything he needs. My dogs eat scraps all the time and nothing has ever bothered them. Dogs are tough eaters, and things are dissenfected in the mouth. If you ate it, why can't the dog!!?? You will want to avoid giving him a pan of grease tho, only just a tiny bit poured over dry dog food. the grease will clog his arteries, but a little bit will make his coat shine. You may also want to get a pigmy goat to eat the veggies your dog won't. We give our leftover veggies to our horses.

You shouldn't feed any pet with leftovers. All animals have special needs and if you feed them things that aren't naturally in their diet it could cause problems,or more correct it WILL cause problems.A lot of diseases, like mad cow disease, wouldn't exist is people just gave the animals only the food they should have.Giving "vegetarian" animals like cows, goats, sheep, chickens and even pigs meat leftovers will cause diseases that can infect humans.Cats and dogs can't eat a lot of stuff, for example you should never feed your dog onions, cause it causes haemolysis.
Just throw the leftovers away and if you want a pet feed it with food specially made for their kind.

I love animals and have nice pets surrounding me.

However, they don't eat leftovers.

Dogs and cats might be what you want.

Most people keep them as pets, but I don't have any because they can transmit disease if not maintained properly.

They require extensive care and expense.

Only my canaries can eat certain fruits and vegetables I buy for the home.

Whatever pet animals you decide on, make sure you keep them very clean or else you can disrupt your clean home and your children won't have the benefit of a healthy home.

It's easier to feed the neighborhood stray or neighbors dog over the fence. No bo bo in the back yard for the kids or you to step in. What goes in must come out and it really smells in the summer time . Happy Hunting and good luck.
