In most cases, yes. Some newer Nvidia chipsets (nforce 2/3) had integrated video that had its own integrated memory and didn't share RAM.

But for the most part, it usually does grab memory from main RAM. In your case, 128MB is being used. You should be able to adjust that in the BIOS if you want it to use less. 64MB is usually enough if you're not gaming. If you are, then consider installing a video card.

As for upgrading the sound card...well...that's another issue! Years ago, it used to be that integrated sound was a bad thing. The onboard chips would steal resources from the CPU since software emulation was all it could do. Nowadays, however, most onboard sound have their own "hardware decoder" which is a big improvement. Plus, CPUs are much faster than the old PIII 800MHz, which is the kind of CPU that was common when onboard sound used to be an issue. So if you have a newer P4 or faster, I wouldn't worry one second about having it onboard contrary to what the guy above me said!

if you change the shared memory, then it won't have any to work. to solve using the memory in your system, you would need to get a pci sound card and also a video card. then all you system memory is not used by anything but the system itself.
