That's just horrible! Don't be too quick to judge the vet though! He may have been right to tell you that was the best to do. However, each animal is different and each injury is different.
Either way, I suggest taking your hamster to another vet and explain that to them what the previous vet said to do. Don't ever feel shameful for seeking a second opinion! I hope your lil guy makes a smooth recovery!

Hi... Your poor little guy definately needs to go back to the vet - it is up to you whether you go to the same one or a different one (Trust your gut instinct on this decision). When you are at the vet - dont leave until you are satisfied with their answer as to what you can do for your 'little man', you would be surprised to hear of just what types of animals people take to the vet! There are so many things that could have occured, your 'little man' might still be too active and still be injuring his leg - hence the bone starting to pierce the skin. He will definately be in some pain and discomfort. The vet may try to strap his leg for him (hard due to his size) or he may give you some other options. Either way if you truely love your 'little man' (as you have shown you do by posting this question) you need to get him to a vet ASAP so that they can help him.
I hope that the outcome is to your liking and they can mend your 'little man'.
I wish you all the best with this.

First of all, phone up and get the advice off a different vet and maybe take him in. Dont be too worried, I know this seems harsh, although he is in a lot of pain, dont tape it up,unless the vet does it,you could restrict the blood flow and he will loose the leg. Keep his cage very clean, (try KEEP IT CLEAN for small animals from the pet shop, you can spray it onto bedding etc its a disinfectant as well as deoderiser etc) so he doesnt, in his more vunerable state, contract an infection or wet tail.
Keep him, in a quiet room, away from noise and observe him.
I know a hamster, or used to till it died age 4, called PegLeg. her owners used to TORTURE her. they cut off her leg, literally, and didnt seek veternary help. The hamster went on, to a new home, thats how I knew her, and had 3 litters of babies and lived a full and happy life. They are surpisingly versatile. But do seek the advice of a vet.

If his leg isn't mending and you know he is in pain get him to a vet because if it is broken it isn't going to be able to heal without some help he may even need to get a pin put in or something like that just get him some help as soon as you can.

Please take him to another vet. Obviously the vet you visited is mistaken. Poor little guy. Think about it this way... if it was your leg would you just leave it? Cost of proper treatment should not matter either. One of my babies, a cockateil, has cost me $1200 so far. We keep these creatures as pets, we are responsible for ensuring their health, environment and happiness is the very best we can provide. This has made me cry. Imagine his pain and discomfort. So sad.

May be you should think about having him put to sleep. If the vet can't do anything it's cruel to keep him alive if he is in a lot of pain. I know it's horrible but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
I would take him to another vet for a second opinion first though.

Get the vet round immediately and have the poor little thing put out of it's misery.I know that sounds harsh, but the alternatives seem worse. Sorry
P.S I watched my cat give birth to 4 kittens this morning.
