Some people become famous for one of the these reasons:
1. for having special talents (artists, musicians, painters, etc.);
2. for having special knowledge (scientists, professors, inventors, etc. ) or training (football/basketball players, etc.);
3. for being different from the "crowd" (very tall, very short, very old, etc.) or for doing something "bizarre" (like many of those people listed in the Guinness Book of Records);
4. for having done something out of the ordinary (such as saving someone´s life);
5. for breaking the law (robbers, rapists, terrorists, etc.); in this case, they´re not exactly "famous" but "notorious" (= famous for something bad).

Fame---the state of being famous!
Famous-- well known to a large group of people
Why they like it? It is probably nice to know that many people know you and might help you in times of need. It may also give a sense of power
