Because those are the only sources where we can get news that is even close to the truth, And if we don't protect it by funding it, we will lose it forever. The far right neo-conservatives who control the mainstream media would love nothing more than to see PBS and NPR gone. Without non-partisan broadcasting they could control EVERYTHING we see and hear on TV and Radio.Public broadcasting is essential to the conservation free speech in America. The answer from Slicktop is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Public broadcasting airs opposing viewpoints and the right doesn't like that so their attitude is crush the messenger, don't adress the issue. Thank you, Slicktop8.

Why should people pay their income taxes? Show me, in the law, not just what the IRS "says", where any individual actually has to pay personal income taxes! If you do that, I'll write you a check for $211,301.61. Now that's a precise offer that you won't want to miss out on.
Unfortunately for you, you will miss out on that opportunity for over $200 grand. Because there is no law...I repeat, there is no law that requires you personally to pay income taxes.
The amount of money that the IRS raises (revenue) from personal income taxes only goes to pay the interest on the national debt. The rest of government funding is paid for through other taxes. You'll probably never hear this from the mainstream media.
You'll also probably never hear about the case of Beversdorf v. IRS and how, after they stole his home from him, he won in court. Since then, the IRS has avoided seizing personal property in my neck of the woods because too many of us know the truth.
Does this mean we should have taxdollars go to prop up PBS or NPR? If you want my opinion on the matter it's an emphatic NO! But then there are a slew of programs I would personally end tommorrow if given the option entirely. Most of what government does is not meant to help 'the people' like they say it is. It's only there to create a dependence upon government for solutions rather than independence from government which empowers citizens to solve their own problems.
So as Tax Day shows up at your door and you file your taxes again and again just know one thing. There are those of us who don't pay personal income taxes and we told you so. When will you grow a spine?
What you have read here is merely the tip of the iceberg. If you want to learn more start by reading the law listed in my sources and order a copy of Freedom To Fascism from http://www.freedomtofascism.com/
Those who say the mainstream media is controlled by neo-conservatives are completely uninformed at best. The mainstream media is controlled by the same people who own the Federal Reserve. They do this by owning the majority shares of stock. Can you say CBS, NBC, CNN, ABC, network radio, 1,000's of newspapers, magazines and websites not too mention Hollyweird?
Please copy this and pass it along to your fellow countrymen. You're future freedom depends on you taking action.

There is no real or logical reason. Just another example of the left and their incredibly arrogant and illogical belief system. 1st we'll foot the bill for PBS and NPR, and then they will do everything in their power to quell any voice of dissent from the right in the media.

Because, everyone benefits from NPR and PBS. There may be shows or programs you don't agree with, but then there are shows and programming aimed at you as well. That is how it should be and if it isn't you should get involved with their programming boards.
Part of the idea behind the two is that they are funded differently than other stations so are free of the "taint" other stations could be part of.

Either PBS or NPR can provide good programs for listeners. I think it is reasonable.

Actually because it is federal law to assist public forms of broadcasting.
Also, based on this, let's cut off off all funds to religous faith-based organizations then.
