It really is that difficult. I had no problem in high school, college, or gradulate school. High grades all the way.

Then I went to law school, and was surrounded by people just like me. I was happy to get C's. There was 50% drop out rate the first year.

Could one study for a year and take the bar?

No on two counts: First, the Bar won't let you. Except for the rare exception of clerks who work judges for 10+years, you need to go to law school to take the Bar exam.

Second, it's doubtfull you would pass. For example, the California pass rate is about 50%. That's 50% of the people who have gone though law school. A couple of years back, one of the Deans at the Stanford Law School (a top law school in the US) took the California Bar Exam. She co-wrote a text book on consitiutional law that's used in many law schools. She Failed.
(she passed the second time).

I suppose there are some people who could pass after a year of study. There are also people who can learn to play the violin at top levels in a year. But there aren't very many, and they would have to go to law school any way.

law school is extreme;ly difficult. it requires a committment to study as well as using a greoup study methods so as to cove all the material of the given courses. the first thing you have to understand is that unless you study as a rteam, you can't get through all the material in the time allotted., that's what the team is for. you cover a specific area or number of cases, and each of the others does the same but for other cases. you then give and receive copies of each others information to study together. a bar exam is taken only after you fet your law degree. most who take the exam work for a firm which gets them prepared for the bar for several weeks and months before it is taken. it is extremely difficult, and many fail the first and second tries before passing it.
it takes at least three, and often four years of study to get through law school, but there are some courses that you pick (electives) for study because they are of interest to you. those are usually in the last two years since the first two years involve fedseral and state codes, and you will also be representing -pro-bono- (free) those in need of legal help. as you get deeper into the study, you'll get more and more complex cases to work on. many law schools require you to do pro-bono work in order to graduate.
