Ana Kournikova, was a bad tennis player ,but the media(cauz her beauty) was making her a tennis star.
Maria Sharapova was made a star in tennis, even when she was in the 100 ranks in 2004.
Ana Ivanovici, Hansukova, Vaidasova were made stars in the making by the media, untill it was proven other wise.
They assume that if ur pretty then ur a tennis star in the making.
Just like the silly Hollywood movies, always heros are the good looking & the ugly is the vilent.

because they promote the sport. It isn't fair but it is much more interesting to watch some eye candy rather than a plain jane or average joe or whatever. it's ****** up but that's the way it is.
However, I will never understand the kournikova frenzy (she had an E! True Hollywood story for goodness sake). She indeed WAS a good player but the media made it out like she was ranked number 1 for five years or some **** like that. That was just almost pathetic.

Kournikova was being profiled when she was 8 years old, for the talent she showed and not for her famous looks. I remember reading a Sports Illustrated article about a 10 year old Venus Williams. Anna Kournikova won several Grand Slam Doubles Titles, and had many good wins over high ranked-(even #1 ranked) players. Ivanovic, Hantuchova, and Vaidisova have all had very good wins---enough to merit media profiling. I've seen and read profiles on a number of tennis players, pretty or not, as a direct result of their match wins, interesting backgrounds, etc. Pretty people are often chosen to sell a multitude of products, and when they happen to be athletes, and explosive buzz occurs in advertising. Maria Sharapova became a star after she beat Serena Williams for the Wimbledon title, in 2004... and she was in the top 40 to start 2004, and climbed up after winning big matches, and tournaments.

Unfortunately its because sex sells. More people are going to watch a good-looking tennis player who plays average then a Not-so-good-looking tennis player who is one of the best in the world
Its the same way in mens tennis. More people know Andy Roddick then Roger Federer. Roger is one of the best in the world. But when it comes to who looks better, Andy wins that hands down. I had no idea who Roger was till I started watching Tennis. But I knew Andy Roddick way before I got into tennis.
*I'm not putting Roddick down. He's my favorite tennis player.

I agree the media is very shallow. This is because there is little regulation on what they say. Moreover sometimes they can't find a story, so they just make talk about some vain, stupid stuff.

You make a good point, but let's go with and make underwear optional on tour, rather than being more conservative.
