It is because of our everything 'goes' attitude. We have so many problems dodging us right from the day of independence. The problem of overpopulation, unemployment, poverty, inflation, lack of basic infrastructure and facilities, religion disputes etc. etc. We do not do any action to solve these problems. The politicians are not interested in solving the problems, they get more votes if the problem (bogey man) remains. Instead, they stir up more trouble, to profit from the ensuring commotion. The people just watch, without a backbone, without a positive opinion, and palate whatever crap is dished out to them. This attitude is responsible for being left back, in this competitive world.

Because of Delayed Industrialization and still the Manufacturing Sector is'nt getting the desired attention. Another noteworthy reason is the lack of Infrastructure planning and the secondary treatment that it is given in the crucial Annual Budgets. Anyhow as far as the labour intensive services sectors like IT & BPOs are concerned India is right on top primarily due to abundance of skilled but cheap labour. At present for removal of poverty India should focus on Agricultural sector for the next 10 yrs and try to produce a homegrown Agro Based Industies as a transition into the manufacturing sector. Only manufacturing can increase the productivity & hence the savings per individual thus increasing the prosperity. Since IT is mainly dependent on low cost outsourcing, hence it is a prerequisite that the labour be cheap which it no longer will be due to India's fast growth (measured in GDP) & rising inflation. So IT sector cannot be considered as a long term measure for sustained economic growth. Also the farmers & the other not so well educated masses cannot take advantage of the IT sector, so it cannot be considered as a means for removal of poverty.

Why India is backwards? Because of hundred years of foreign occupation and brutal reigns starting from 900 AD. Until then India was the most advanced country with rich resources, knowledge, capability and what not.

For more than 1000 years it was beaten badly, messed up, looted and tortured to death.

It's still bleeding. Some of the old deseases like castism and groupism are preying on it while caught up with new deseases like corruption, indiscipline, greed etc.,

If you are weak, then you have less resistance. Bad politics, corruption, indiscipline etc., are all the byproducts poverty which was the result of hundreds of years of suppression.
