I'm not the greatest football fan, but I just can't stand Manchester United fans. Is this a Nationwide thing or just in the North West. And before you ask no I'm not a Man City fan either.

Just for the record I hate them because on the odd occassions when they do loose they think the world has ended, and they seam totally unable to accept that it was their fault. it was the grass, the ref, the weather etc.

Let me start by saying that I am a West Ham fan, so my views are not based on the Mancs being a great rival of ours!

I think it's all relative in terms of who football fans hate. At the moment, I would say that most fans would say that Chelski are the team to hate, because they have the money and the (relative) success. I am showing my age now, but I have a dislike to Liverpool because they were the team winning everything in the 70's and early 80's. Man U's trophies were gained in the 90's, where I would assume you began to really get into football. I never thought I would say this, but I would rather Man U win the Premiership this season than Chelsea.

Finally, I think that my boys are doomed this season. What an embarrassment!

Success over a period of time breeds new fans for these clubs. You can call it glory hunting but kids want to support the best teams or the teams that are winning at that time unless they are brought up by somebody to follow another team.

That is why a lot of people (mainly kids or people who started following football) started to support teams like Liverpool in the 70s, United in the 90s and now Chelsea. 5 seasons ago you would not have had whole sections of sports shops outside of London dedicated to Chelsea because they hadnt been successful over a period of time. Thats not to say that Chelsea didnt have fans but they were more concentrated around London, people who had been brought up to follow them.

I'm not a United fan but I know of a lot of United fans who live in Manchester that don't like some of their own because they don't come from the city. The trouble is kids or people from outside the UK want to feel as though they are supporting the best, those teams winning trophies rather than supporting teams such as Torquay, for example, struggling at the very end of the bottom division for the last 5+ years. Where would the satisfaction in that be?

But as an Everton fan, I understand why people hate these clubs and their supporters because I doubt many would have stuck around to see the dire times we had in the 90s after a great period in the 80s. Yet, Goodison was nearly full every week. Some people only want the good times and start to moan at anything when things don't go they're way. To label them all would be unfair as you still have loyal supporters in every team in this country.

As a life long Man U hater I can honestly say it has nothing whatsoever to do with being jealous.
I started hating them during the late 70's early 80's when my team (Liverpool) where the best team in the world.
Imagine today a team that had the record Liverpool had at that time 4 European cups, countless league titles, Eufa cup, Fa cups, we won the league cup four years on the bounce. The Media would be exalting them from every page and every footy programme.
What did we get? Our local (Manchester based) media hardly said anything. if we did get a mention it was soon followed with the 'Manchester united of course had the highest attendance this year'. At least we have never had the ignominy of the 2nd division to contend with though.
It continues today, it seems that part of the job specification to be a football writer is to be a Man u supporter.

That's why I hate them, and always will.

I am a manchester united fan, on the odd occasion we do lose, it is because of the pitch, the weather, the ref, the ball, the fact that the shirts are grey and the players cant see each other; (this happened years ago where they got rid of a grey shirt half way through a match because they claimed the players couldnt see each other against the glum faces of the supporters, in fact, we were just losing to southampton, they replaced it with a blue and white striped shirt, both were horrible)

This has nothing to do with you hating man united, its just that the success they have acheived in the past, becoming the worlds most famous and well supported football club, makes supporters of other clubs envious, and then these feelings are passed on to other people, even if they do not follow football, simply because their dad hates man utd.

Glory Glory Man United, and the reds go marching on!

I'm not a Man U fan, but a big supporter of the beautiful game in general, I am lucky enough to attend a number of premiership and FA cup matches and have noticed one thing, Man Utd have an image, lots of cash, lots of posing and most of the stadium is full of the 'prawn sandwich brigade', Chelsea has some of this but its still a macho stadium with very big men and even bigger tattoo's!! The best atmosphere and the most exciting, loyal fan base is definitely in Liverpool, both Liverpool and Everton fans are true football supporters, no flashy image, a real family atmosphere and one where virtually all of the crowd understand the offside rule.

Bloody hell! I got to about halfway down and got bored of all the boring drivel written from the fingers of ignorant dummys. Im a United fan, ive got UNITED running through my blood and i have to say im proud, not just because of all the trophys. I think a lot has to be the quality football throughout the years and they always think about how to entertain their fans.

It has nothing to do with UNITED fans being arrogant, doesnt every fan jump up and down if their team wins, and even shout in the street if they're drunk?

I read a lot of the answers, and a lot said it has A LOT to do with UNITED being a top team and dominating the nineties, well i have to agree, it has started to happen to Chelsea, and didnt everyone want Arsenal to get beaten when they had their unbeaten season and when United beat them everyone was happy and the same with when United beat Chelsea. I think its real bitter when teams hate just for the sake of hating.

It the same in other sport when people hate on America just for being good at what they do.

When Liverpool actually won the Champions League i was happy and i was willing them to win, i was jumping when they scored each time because i wanted a British team to win and i wanted an underdog to win. I remember reading a newspaper article written the day after UNITED won the Champions League in 99 and the guy said that he supports another team but on this one night of the year afterwards he felt like a United supporter because it felt like such a great sporting occasion to witness in the history of football from such a great team with an illustrious rich history, and it is quotes like that what people need to learn from.

UNITED FOREVER!!

My partner is a Manchester United fan and i find Man U easy to watch. Chelsea on the other hand are a bunch of cheating divers who put the game of football to shame and they wouldn't be anywhere without their chequebook that is Roman Abramovich. At least Man U play good football and don't whinge and cry to the ref everytime a decision doesn't go their way.

I'm not a football fan. However I face-paint outside the Millenium Stadium whenever there are matches. If it's a rugby match (another sport I don't like), the fans on both sides are always really friendly and fun to deal with. If it's a football match, the fans are usually not as friendly or as easy to deal with. When Liverpool played West Ham, the Liverpool fans were an absolute disgrace (men, women and children). The majority of the fans were at best downright rude and at worst, physically and sexually aggressive.
