A couple of friends told me that you don't need insurance on a motorcycle if you have health insurance. Is that true?

Florida law states that it is not necessary to carry insurance as long as you wear a helmet, but it's not that expensive. I would suggest having it for your own protection.

The question here is how many people that have answered actually ride in Florida.

If it's being financed, the bank will make you insure it. After it's paid for, you don't have to have it insured, but if you let the insurance drop, the company will send a note to the DMV saying that you don't have insurance on it, that starts something else. You are supposed to have 10K health insurance if you don't wear a helmet, pays for the body bag and the road hose down. But if the bike is worth anything, it's worth it to keep it insured. I have Progressive and pay less than a dollar a day for two bikes, an 03 Roadstar and 02 V-Star

The state says that if you ride without a helmet you need to have a minimum of 10,000 medical insurance,As far as insurance on the bike,no you do not need it,I am from florida and have had no problem registering my bike,I have been stopped and never been asked for insurance papers either, but it is a good thing to have insurance with all the crazy drivers down here.

I ride in Florida... I have always ridden in Florida... I have never had to insure my bike... The only people who do have to carry insurance in Florida are riders under twenty one years of age, or over twenty one if you ride without a helmet in which case, you only need to have MEDICAL insurance of at least a $10K policy...

Not necessarily. Some states (Florida used to be one, no clue if they still are, and Montana are 2 that come to mind) don't require any kind of insurance on motorcycles.

Some Financing companies (Kawasaki Good Times for sure) don't require insurance either.

But for the most part, in most areas under most situations, yes. A basic liability insurance is required.

Edited to add the information that people seem to just not research: From Florida Laws:

"MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE

Florida's mandatory Personal Injury Protection insurance does not apply to motorcycles. Street legal motorcycles with three (3) wheels and motorcycles with attached sidecars are also exempt from this compulsory insurance requirement. The voluntary purchase of motor vehicle liability insurance is recommended for your protection and the protection of other persons. Failure to carry liability insurance can result in the loss of your driver license, tag(s), and registration(s) if you are involved in a traffic accident, convicted of DUI or other occurrences as defined in the Financial Responsibility Law, Chapter 324, Florida Statutes."

Found here:

http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/handbooks/mo...

And on this page from Montana DMV, it tells you what's needed to register a motorcycle:

http://www.dmv.org/mt-montana/motorcycle...

You'll notice the LACK of proof of insurance. There's absolutly no mention of need for insurance on motorcycles anywhere in any of their literature as it's NOT REQURED.

Come on people, you have to know that what's true for your state/location is not necessarily true for Other states/locations.

Same deal as a car. Anything that you can legally drive on public roads needs license, registration, and insurance.
