Literature professors will have you believe it's eight, all of which have their basis in very old stories... I can't remember them all but a selection is...

Samson and Delilah - A once strong individual is brought down by a fatal flaw.

Romeo and Juliet - Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, they get back together, it doesn't matter.

Tristan and Isolde - Triangles, eternal or otherwise.

Candide - The innocent abroad.

Circe - The spider and the fly, often the basis for film noir.
