I can suggest a neat fabric to look for. Nylon/cotton blend. It feels soft like cotton (it isn't stretchy) but it drys fast like swim trunks. So if you are back and forth in the water, these would suit you well. It is usually sporty type places to look, like Gap, PacSun, American Eagle, Old Navy, etc.
Usually they are cargo design, or surf short/swim trunk. Baggie, laceup in the front but also have a zip or mock fly.

Just to clarify a common misconception, Minnesota, NOT Maine has the northern most point in the Lower 48. Check it out on a globe. Mercader projections (flat maps) distort the northern and southern areas of the world. And winter can be pretty long, but summer though short, can be VERY hot, and they are humid, too. And the Mosquitos are huge and hungry.
