I think I would have to go with coach Shula. Shula set numerous records in his 33 seasons as a head coach. He holds NFL records for regular season wins (328), total victories (347), single season win percentage (1.000 in 1972), most games coached (526), most consecutive seasons coached (33), Super Bowl appearances (6) His teams' won 7 NFL conference titles: 1964, 1968, 1971-73, 1982 and 1984.

I'd have to agree with Don Shula as the best of all time. As ex-Oiler coach Bum Phillips once said; "He can take his players and beat yours, and he can take your players and beat his."
Honorable mentions: Lombardi, Landry & Walsh.

I would have to agree with you, Shula is very high on the best coaches poll, but I believe that Paul Brown has to be on the top of that list.
This man reinvented coaching when he entered the league, and is the only coach to have a team named after him.... the Cleveland Browns.
Paul Brown was the first coach of the new franchise in 1946 when they entered the All-American Football Conference. They won the title all four years of the AAFC existance. In 1950 the Browns, led by coach Brown entered the NFL, and nothing changed. The Browns continued their dominace in the NFL throughout the 50's until the coach left the team. No professional coach has more championships during his career than this man.
Also, Brown was one of Shula's mentors. Shula learned the best, from the best.

I agree he was the greatest coach (I dont know Coach Ditka comes in a close second in my book) but you cant give that much credit to the 72 Dolphins. I hate doing this all the time but someone has to rip the 72 Dolphins a little bit, because for one thing, they only played 16 games! That's playoffs and regular season combined. Imagine if they were in the current NFL schedule where they would play 16 games in the regular season, have to win all of those, then play a divisional game, a conference championship game, and then win the Super Bowl. That's 3 more games. Who knows if the Dolphins would have won 3 more games. Thats why to me the 85 Bears are still the best team ever because they did lose one game, but they played 3 more games than the 72 Dolphins did.

I would have to go with Bill Walsh. Three Super Bowls in 10 years and the year after he left they won again, so call it 3 1/2. Plus he created an offense - the West Coast offense that many teams still run. His assistants have become head coaches, won Super Bowls and on and on.
Lombardi and Shula great as well, but considering above I go with Walsh.

I think it's George " Papa Bear " Halas. I mean this guy is like the George Washington of the NFL. Not to mention he founded the Decatur Staleys in 1920, which he renamed the Chicago Bears in 1922. Now, How many coaches do you know that started thier own team?!! But, I am a HUGE Bears fan.

Bill Walsh of the 49ers. He was a genius who won 3 Super Bowls and could have won more if he stuck around.

My vote would be for either Bill Walsh or Paul Brown. Both tremendous innovators and great judges of talent.

Very true.
But arguments could be made for Vince Lumbardi and Bill Walsh as well.
