Everybody on this site should take a print-screen of the question and the answers and mail it to their elected officials. Let's all be heard, loud and clear.
It should not only be a felony, it should be a federal felony, so as to bring to bear greater amount of resources to pursue those who abuse all animals and pets.

Absolutely!!! What is the difference between human and animal abuse? We are just animals who think we rule the world. Any abuse or cruelty to another living creature should be viewed as just that, abuse. All life is worth protecting.

Every time we get to the question of making laws we come up with the problem of definitions. So, by "animal abuse" would you include the killing of animals for food? There are certainly those who argue that animals have as much right to live as humans. Then, do we include birds and fishes in the category of "animals"?. And would we classify "abuse" as the taking of an animal out of its natural habitat and locking it in a cage (or pen, or stockyard, or any sized man-made enclosure)? If we go that route we come up against taming any animal and using it to serve human needs. Would that constitute abuse? And finally, if there are distinctions to be made here, who is it who is in charge of making those distinctions? So when the answer "yes" is given to your question, I submit there are multiple other questions that must be answered before we can begin passing laws.

Yes, it should.
Unfortunatly, a great many places merely categorize animal abuse as a for of damage to property and punish those responsible accordingly.
In my opinion there should be varying degrees of animal cruelty as there are for abuse and cruelty to humans. The current state of laws needs to do more to punish those that go out of their way to flagrantly abuse animals.

Animal cruelty is wrong but you should worry more about child cruelty . Anyone abusing a child in anyway should get the chair.

Abuse of a cat, a being I would hardly classify as an 'animal', should most certainly be considered a felony.

of course. the reason u should have a cat is to love it or any pet. you buy a pet so it can be your conpanion, your best friend, and something to cherish. abusing an animal is just sick. they cant even protect themselves against humans, and i feel that it should definetely be a felony becasue pets r here to be loved not hurt.
